This assignment was crazy: we had one week to come up with a chindogu (aka a useless invention), make a physical prototype of it, and then make roughly a minute-long advertisement for it. I was one of the only people who chose to animate the ad, although as you can see, the animation is as minimal as possible (and pretty glitchy) because this was all done in a week. You might have to turn up the sound; the levels changed a bit when I uploaded it online.

Oh, also, my chindogu started out as an extra hand to rest your head on when you’re tired in class (my prototype was basically an inflated rubber glove that you could strap onto your shoulder), not this extremely sad product, but my professor wanted me to push it into the realm of absurdity, so there you go haha.

Here’s my awkward little 2-week Flash project. I don’t love it, but I learned how to use symbols and symbol nesting, so that’s good. This is the piece you’ve heard me complaining about for the past many weeks. Making a film in a program and simultaneously learning how to use that program for the first time can be a really frustrating experience. There are so many things I still wish I could change, and would’ve designed and animated differently at the start if I knew then what I know now about working in After Effects. That said, what really counts is that making this film was a humongous learning experience that I’m really glad I had this semester. After Effects can be a tedious and frustrating program, but it’s also an incredibly useful tool for so many different types of animated projects, and I will definitely be using it a lot in the future.

This was my final animation for Animation II. The background layers were cut out of tracing paper, shot separately on a light box, and composed in After Effects. The characters were animated in Flash and masked with tracing paper textures (next year I’m going to edit the flickering and opacity in places so it’s a little less distracting), and then composed and tweaked in After Effects as well. The sound is also sort of a placeholder—I’d like to compose an original soundscape and not have any music in it. But for a two-week mixed media experiment I’m quite happy with it!

I’m officially completely DONE with this semester! I can’t say I’m officially done with finals (I have my last art history class on Monday, have to do some extra edits on my toolbox pieces by Wednesday, and have to edit a bunch of little things for my final review), but I got through The Week from Hell. I don’t even want to mentally relive the craziness of my schedule this past week so I won’t walk you through it, but it was definitely the most exhausting, grueling finals week of my life. I’m done with my animation and illustration classes, I don’t have any more pressing due dates or daunting tasks, and I can sleep and relax and slowly ease into summer mode (and get a haircut…good GOD do I need a haircut!). My final review isn’t until the 20th, which I am thankful for as it means I don’t have to start editing old pieces right away. It’s also with my future Animation III professor, which is great because I’ve never met him before, I’ve heard he’s super chill, and this way he’ll be familiar with me and my work when I start his class in the fall.

(Sorry for the terrible grammar or whatever in this post—I just got a few hours of sleep for the first time in quite a while, but I still have a long ways to go before I’m back to my fully coherent, well-rested self.)

Oh, and I’ll post some animations soon, probably after more edits have been made.

Will Arnett Explains the Origins of His Arrested Development Chicken Dance

Will Arnett Explains the Origins of His Arrested Development Chicken Dance:
thebluthcompany:

To decide what Gob’s bad impression of a chicken might be, Arnett consulted on set in 2003 with series executive producers Mitch Hurwitz and James Vallely. They all tried out different versions for each other. “Jimmy started doing a little bit, then Mitch got up and did some, and then I began trying things,” remembers Arnett. “Picture three grown men hopping around, working out what it would be … They were pitching this really taunting dance, but I wanted to give it this very sharp, almost roosterlike, chest-sticking-out mannerism, like a real macho bravado dance.” And how did clapping get introduced to the move? “Because I wanted it to be only sort of threatening.”

If I do, then I can spend tomorrow working on my Photoshop project and the rest of the week working on my Animation II final, and have lots of weekend time free to spend with family. This week is crunch time, but I’m so excited to just power through it and be done with it. I figure next weekend will be my reward for getting through this bulk of work, and that will give me energy to finish the Photoshop project, add sound to my After Effects project, and edit my old Flash project for next Wednesday. Then, besides writing a short art history paper and tweaking things over the next couple of weeks, I’m DONE!

newyorker:

I don’t know if I’ve ever spent so much emotional energy and held so much tension during one morning as I did yesterday. I’m also glad last night’s celebrations are over—I understand feeling grateful for the end of violence and proud of those who got us there, but the drunken whooping flag-waving fireworks-exploding block party celebration felt totally inappropriate to me. This is not the Fourth of July. People lost lives this week and it was a scary time for everyone. I think this is a time to be grateful for the goodness and bravery of people in this city, to reflect on the positive and negative aspects of the nation’s responses to the events, and to realize that this terror we experienced this week is just a taste of what other communities around the world experience all the time. Yes, I am happy and relieved and proud that this awful week has ended, but this does not feel like a time for loud, giddy jubilance…it just doesn’t. At least to me. It feels like a time for big sighs of relief, gratitude, and reflection.
