I really didn’t want to leave my cozy little cave and travel through the chilly rain to Cambridge, but I am glad that I did. Jiro Dreams of Sushi at the Kendall Square Cinema was such a heartening little film. It’s about a master sushi chef or shokunin, Jiro, and his life’s passion. The man is both cute and intimidating, for although he is an adorable old man, he is almost scarily self-disciplined and infinitely hard-working. Every shot of sushi is absolutely mouth-watering. Sometimes there are tantalizing  slow-motion shots of sauces being brushed on fish, a huge fresh hunk of tuna being sliced, or the fluffiest rice you’ve ever seen being stirred. Total food-porn.
Since I don’t know how to cook or prepare fish and it’s too expensive for me anyways, I’m making stir-fry for dinner. I have a feeling that tonight, I too shall dream of sushi.

Last night Sarah and I made homemade meatballs and spaghetti while listening to Italian opera music, and then ate our dinner in front of The Sopranos. It was so awesome that we decided this shall be a tradition that we do on the first Friday of every other month or so, and we shall call it Italian Friday.

It also helped me to discover that Italian opera music is kind of great, and I want to listen to more of it…

On the menu for today: HOMEWORK. And leftovers, mmmmm. Working on a comic for Time class, an animation, and I have to shoot 3 animations when I’m finished with that last one. Also gotta watch the latest 30 Rock. Dim sum outing with buddies tomorrow!

Happy Hanukkah (or whichever way you prefer to spell it)! My mom and I made oodles of latkes tonight and they were DELICIOUS! I must admit it: I think latkes are one of my favorite parts of Judaism.

Happy apartment, gingerbread (happy belated birthday, Emily Dickinson!), and a great wintry breakfast (tea, gingerbread, and a clementine).

Hehe.
This apartment is so cozy right now; earlier I made hot mulled cider for me and Sarah while we worked, and now we’ve got an adorable little pot roast cooking with all sorts of delicious seasonings and herbs and veggies roasting! I’ve also been watching “The Lord of the Rings” while I work, which is a source of comfort to me because it makes me think of cozy times at home, curling up on the couch with my dad while something amazing cooks in the kitchen.

Sometimes these neighbors of mine make me become such a Squidward. This is pretty much what I looked like at 3AM last night when my floor was vibrating from the music downstairs which was super loud even through earplugs. Basement neighbors, I thought you were on the good neighbors list! I guess I thought wrong.
It’s a new day though. Gonna drink some tea, go to the BPL and take out some audiobooks, and do a little clothing shopping.
OH, and I discovered something great last night! It IS possible to caramelize onions with my stove! I thought that it wasn’t possible because it never worked before; somehow, even when I set the heat dial between “low” and “off,” they’d still manage to cook too quickly…burn, even. But I used a different pan last night, and it worked! Phewf! Y’all know I need my caramelized onions.

A fresh, piping hot slice of cornbread makes studying so much more pleasant.

I had the most intense case of The Cleaning Bug this morning than I’ve had in a very long time.

After a night of much-needed sleep (which has completely revived me and now I no longer feel icky), I woke up feeling super energized. I was going to throw on the wheel for a bit, but instead I decided to get our gross apartment in order. My trash was full, the bathroom trash was full, and the kitchen was in a condition of EPIC grossness…how can I even begin to describe it—oh! Okay. From the state of our kitchen, you’d think that four frat boys lived in our apartment, not two usually-extremely-tidy girls. It got as gross as it was because Sarah, being sick, has been pretty lazy about the kitchen, and I sort of naturally fell into the same habits, and eventually we were both overwhelmed by the mess and didn’t want to deal with it, therefore letting it reach new heights of crustiness and disgustingness.

So I took out my trash, the bathroom trash, the kitchen trash, an extra kitchen trash full of bad extra-smelly trash, four bags of recyclables (there was a huge tower of recyclables just growing and growing in the corner of the room), and the box from the bookshelf; emptied the dishwasher, cleaned the dishes in the sink, emptied out the drying rack, and cleaned all the pots and pans on the stove; did a thorough wipe-down of the kitchen and an intense scrubbing of the stovetop; and bought a Swiffer Wet Jet while I was at the supermarket because our floor is horrific and we own no mop or mop-like items.

Now you know how insane I can be.

But I feel SO good now; I listened to happy music while I did the dishes which is always a good thing, and now I no longer feel like there must be zillions of germs and bacteria festering and mustering up a microscopic army in my kitchen. Plus I went out to the supermarket because I’ve pretty much been out of food for a few days and I did a BIG all-inclusive shopping which required my Little Old Lady Cart which I now appreciate so much. Yay for getting things in order again!
