This site is a bit weird but useful!

Why is it always when I’m like, man I have been sitting at this desk too long; I’m going to get cozy in bed and read for a good long time! that I suddenly feel intensely inspired to draw, at my desk, while the same old crap plays on my computer that I’ve been listening to or watching for hours? Horrible timing.

My final project for Time is officially in-progress. 50 frames down, roughly 850 to go. I figure if I fill up one 100-page flipbook per day for the next 8-9 days, I should be golden. Which sounds wonderfully simple until I actually think about having to maintain that kind of diligence and drawing stamina…

For my Time class last week, we had to go to a place we’d never been before, and then make a map of it which encompassed our emotional and physical experience in the place, as well as our expectations of it before actually going there. I chose a big park up the hill. Everything on this map is made of letters. I did three different drafts of the map; a conceptual painting, a charcoal drawing, and then finally this. I found it easiest to express everything I needed to by including words; when I included words in the other versions of the map, it just looked crappy, but I think having everything made of words works.

We had to take an animation that we had drawn from the figure last class and add to it. This was originally just a clunky throwing gesture, but I added him getting distracted by his fingernails and getting hit on the head.

I’ve been playing with this little free animation software and I find it pretty satisfying. It’s a really simple, basic program, but I like the way that it mimics the look of pencil-drawn sketches; I feel like I can draw in a more natural style with Pencil than with Flash. Obviously Flash is a much more complex program and allows for all different sorts of control over the way your images are animated etc. etc., but for its own simpler purposes, I enjoy this program.
